I thought I would write another post about overcoming Anorexia Nervosa. As mentioned before, I am doing a Zoom call teaching introductory EFT during eating disorders awareness week on February 6, 2023 at 1 pm MST. The call will be around 30-45 minutes with 30 minutes for questions after the webinar. I have found EFT to be so helpful for managing anxiety as well as emotional regulation. I wish I had known about it when I was struggling with my addiction in my adolescent years. I would have saved my parents from a lot of unnecessary stress. I watched a lot of Ted Talks on Anorexia this week. I understand a lot of the components that make up anorexia- feeling a lot of pressure to be perfect in one’s life, dealing with social anxiety, fitting in, not giving a voice to what you are feeling, the challenges inherent in growing up, etc. I was watching a podcast with a doctor (Dr. James Greenblatt) that has written a book called ‘Answers to Anorexia’. I will get the book out now so I can see if it is helpful to others who are struggling with anorexia (I will let you know what I think on my next blog). He talked about some of the nutrients that can be helpful when one is struggling with an eating disorder (on his podcast). Being a naturopathic doctor, I identified with his functional medicine approach. He talked about the importance of Zinc, amino acids, omega 3 fatty acids for helping ensure good brain function. Zinc status can be evaluated inexpensively by doing a Zinc Tally test. A lot of supplement companies (Metagenics specifically) sells a supplement that is called ‘Zinc tally’. If you take 2 tsp of Zinc Tally and you register that is tastes unpleasant your zinc status may be okay but it is best to check red blood cell levels of zinc with your family doctor. Getting your levels of nutrients into an optimal level may help you if you struggle with eating disorders. Food sources of zinc can prove helpful and those include whole oats (gluten free if you have an autoimmune disease), oysters, pumpkin seeds, chick peas, cashews, almonds, wild sardines, wild salmon, grass fed beef or lamb. If you want to sign up for my free lecture I have done an eventbrite invitation. Search under EFT help for Eating Disorders on February 6th if you want to register for my free introductory Zoom lecture. Until next time, treat yourself with love and compassion. I do have a special on EFT/counseling right now at Parallel Wellness. Sign up for four sessions and it is only $80 for the hour if you are interested. Hope to see you soon! Anorexia Nervosa
I am doing a free Zoom webinar on February 6, 2023 using EFT to support healing from eating disorders. I had anorexia when I was younger (in my teenage years). I was hospitalized twice (once when I was in grade seven and once when I was in grade nine). I realize now that I am a highly sensitive person and that my anxiety fueled my addiction as a young person. I know Emotional Freedom Technique is easy to learn and is effective for treating anxiety. I have managed my anxiety using EFT as well as other things like magnesium and l-theanine. Addictions are a grave problem in our world to manage and EFT is a simple tool that can be learned and applied when you are working to overcome an addiction. My hope is that people with eating disorders will find it helpful in their recovery process. I wanted to mention an excellent book to that talks about anorexia. It is called “The Complete Dictionary of Ailments and Diseases” by Jacques Martel. The section on Anorexia nervosa is spot on. It talks about the underlying thoughts, feelings and emotions at the root of illnesses. Jacques writes that Anorexia is characterized by complete rejection of life. It is the unconscious desire to escape from life, to detest and reject myself because I am experiencing an extreme fear of opening myself to the marvelous life around me. I am hoping to write a book in the future and expand on some of these ideas in Jacque Martels book in order to help others struck in the trap of anorexia. I have definitely experienced a lot of fear in my life that I have had to overcome and I am not finished yet. I have not relapsed since I was 21 years old. I hope by working on a book about anorexia that I will continue to help others struggling with it. I hope to work with other patients struggling with eating disorders using my EFT and counseling service which is on special for $99 for the hour at Parallel Wellness clinic in downtown Calgary. The Review Before A New Year Starts
It is useful to review your year before a new year starts. We have had the winter solstice so the days will start to get longer again. This is a positive. We have to look for small victories and positive things to focus on. What we can be grateful for?! Reviewing your year and making a note of what good things happened and where you grew in a positive way. Write these things down and affirm yourself. The world is still coming out of a pandemic so it will take some time to get back to normal. Because I am a naturopathic doctor I am focused on optimizing my health and the health of all my patients. What did you do for your health this past year that was a positive? Before we start the new year, reflect on the good things you did for your health this past year. Maybe you consistently ate more vegetables; maybe you ate more plants and less meat. Maybe you ate less sugar and limited dairy and gluten because you know they upset your system. Focus on what was positive about your health care last year. Be proud of the fact that you exercised consistently last year. How can you improve your health moving forward? I know I need to do more regular yoga and weights. My partner got me 5 pound barbells for me which are a little easier than the 10 pound barbells I have. My plan is to be more consistent with doing weights in my condo. I walk to work and back approximately 4 days a week for about 25 minutes each way. I exercise every day for at least 30 minutes to ensure that I sleep well. I meditate for at least 20 minutes a day. This helps me stay calm and assuages my anxiety. I choose to intermittently fast over night for twelve hours to give my glympathic system time to do its job overnight. The glympathic system cleans out your system overnight and keeps your whole body running smoothly. I am proud of what I have done this year in my commitment to my business. I want to improve my patient numbers this year and so I will reflect on what I have done well this year with an eye on what I can improve on in this next year. I need to drink more water. That is something I can definitely improve this year in terms of my health. Hope everyone had a good holiday. Until I post again, be well and enjoy your loved ones.
