The physical side of healing has always been easier for me than the mental and emotional sides but that doesn’t mean that it has not required effort on my part. Self care is at the top of my list in terms of my values. I spend a lot of time on food preparation. I buy mostly organic produce, grains, and meats. I spend time at farmer’s markets and shop at bigger health food stores like Community Natural Foods. I spend time finding recipes that are nutrient rich and relatively simple to prepare. I choose food with life energy; this means food that is fresh versus foods in a box or a can. I cook my food from scratch. That ensures that there is optimal life energy in the food. If there is more life energy in the food then this translates into more life energy in your body. I used to hate cooking but somewhere along the way, I realized that to really enjoy my food and be satisfied,I would have to learn to cook. I realized that yummy food does not get yummy in a flash. It takes time to prepare. You have to be patient and enjoy the process of food preparation because it is time consuming. Now I enjoy cooking. I put on my favorite music and make an afternoon of it or an evening of it. I cook more food on the weekend such as stews and soups and freeze some so I have some food that is ready to thaw out when I am really tired or am time pressured to make dinner due to some other pressing commitment. I eat gluten and dairy free and find that I have more energy as a result. I wouldn’t recommend that everyone go gluten and dairy free because it is a lot of work but try it for two to four weeks and see if it gives you more energy or alleviates symptoms that you are experiencing on a daily basis. I am now more well versed on the subject of whole grains and know what is required to prepare them in nourishing ways. I try to rotate different grains to reduce allergenic potentiality and to keep myself from getting bored. The physical side of healing involves nourishing your body with nutritious, delicious, nutrient rich food. I subscribe to allrecipes.com for free and modify the recipes to make them more Robin friendly. I also am on emails lists from food blogging friends that are preparing beautiful food (healthy green kitchen – Dr. Winnie Wine who I graduated with). She is always a source of amazing recipes. It is in this way that you actually become inspired to cook beautiful food for yourself. Even living on your own can be a beautiful dining experience if you take the time to prepare a special meal for yourself and celebrate you. Light some special candles and put your favorite music on; say a blessing of thanks for the beautiful food you prepared and bon appetit!
The Emotional Side of Healing
It is important to come from an emotionally centred perspective when you go about your day. It is especially important in today’s world which is often full of stories that centre on fear, anxiety and dejectedness. Whether it be hearing about extreme weather patterns in the world, the state of the economy or the rising costs of living, the media focuses on what gets attention and disregards the positive stories of optimism and hope that also exist in the world but rarely get footage. I stopped watching the news a while ago and do not buy the newspaper. Some people might think it unnecessary to cut down on exposure to the media but when I am feeling overly sensitive to the maladies of the world, I will do this. I set the intention of going about my day from an emotionally centred place from start to finish. That way I am not tossed around by the ups and downs that can occur in one’s day. If you take more time and be vigilant with regards to your emotions in each moment then that vigilance will allow you to stay emotionally centred throughout your day. Staying centred allows you to remain calm and focused on what you need to do. If you are mindful then you don’t react to other people that may not be coming from an emotionally centred place. Staying centred allows you to bring more to the table in your interactions with other people. I feel good knowing that I am interacting with people from my best space possible. I am mindful when I get irritated by something trivial in my day. I remind myself that my day is what I make it and if I am coming from a centred place then I can handle ebbs and flows in my day and flow with them. I don’t decide that I am going to have a stressful day because of the environment I am going into or the people I will be dealing with. I decide that I am going to be centred and when I am in my centre nothing can really affect me. Winds can blow all around me yet I stay solid in my center. It does not matter what I am experiencing; I don’t label what I am experiencing as good or bad. It just is. When you are in your emotionally centred place, then life becomes better. You realize that you are in charge of how you are feeling and this makes you feel more in control. You are confident in your ability to remain centred and that makes you feel better about yourself. This builds self esteem. So decide to stay emotionally centred throughout your day. I know you can do it…
The Emotional Side of Healing
One of the most important things that you can do if you are not well currently is to create a well being list. Make a list of all the things that bring you joy. The things on the list should be easy to do and not require much money if any. The reason you need to make a list of things that bring you joy is because first of all, you may not be aware of what things bring you joy. You may have no idea what brings you joy. This is something to contemplate, hey?! I know for me some of the things on my list include listening to music that I have that I love (Goldfrapp’s Seventh Tree), buying yummy groceries for a meal that I want to prepare (borscht comes to mind), getting a spiritual book out of the library that I want to read (Summer’s Path), taking a hot bath with epsom salts and lavender oil, going swimming at the community center and having a steam after, doing breathing exercises that help my body feel good, the list goes on and on. Another reason to create a well being list is that in doing these things on your list you will release powerful healing chemicals into your body. This helps heal you on a physical level which creates better health. Science is proving this. When I am feeling a little lower in terms of my mood and energy level, I will choose one thing on my well being list and bring that into my day. Doing this increases my joy and shifts my vibration into a better space and brings me more well being which translates into better health. Make a list today of the things that bring you joy and try to do one thing each day to create more well being in your day.
If you have no idea what would bring you joy and your list is really short, then you have some self exploration to do. Set the intention that you want to know more of what brings you joy. Then be open to exploring yourself. Watch what turns up for you? If somebody wants to do something with you (let’s say go bowling and you have never gone bowling and are even not sure you would like to go bowling), say yes even though you have no idea what your experience will be. You might see your anxiety show up or negative voices in your head (I can’t bowl; What if I look like an idiot, etc.) Challenge those voices and release your expectations of what the experience will be like. You are now an empty slate; you are a tableau waiting to be written. All you have to do is agree to say yes to the night of bowling. You say yes to experiencing new things. You say yes to stepping through your fear. You say yes to opening up to life a little bit more. And who knows, you might come home feeling a little more bounce in your step because you tried something new and it was fun. You might see that there is well being available to you in many different forms. You just have to see that it is there. This is how you start to open yourself up to experiencing more joy in your life. This is part of your emotional healing…
