I have had MS for many years. Diagnosed when I was 33 which would make it 23 years but I suspect I have had it for 35 years since I was 21. I strive to maintain my independence. I walk to the store using walking poles and it takes me about 25 minutes one way. I cab it back with groceries. I was out of organic carrots and organic apples so I needed to walk to the store today.
There is construction in my neighborhood right now so I had to ask for some assistance from a construction worker to help me across a small ‘ditch’ for lack of better words. He was so kind and helpful. Then as I continued to walk I needed to walk down some stairs and there were 3 young men at the bottom of the stairs. I am a middle aged woman that is alone so that makes me pause. I have to hold onto my walking poles with my left hand and hold the rail with my right hand as I walk down the stairs.
I had a preconceived notion that these young men were using drugs or were dangerous in some way. I shouted down an inquiry if it was okay for me to walk down the stairs. They said absolutely no problem so I came down the stairs. Again these three young men were so kind to me. I had no reason to fear them at all. One of them said he was inspired by me and what I am doing despite my condition of MS. I was inspired by these young men and their kindness and I hope that they believe in themselves completely and know that they are capable of anything.
